Unleashing The Power Of Two Hands

Transforming Your
Two-Handed Backhand From Powerless To Powerful
A Modern Approach To Developing Two-Handed Backhand Technique Based On Biomechanics

Hey – Tomaz here,
In my 20+ years as a tennis coach, I've noticed an interesting dilemma with the two-handed backhand stroke: It gives players a lot of control, but they struggle to hit the ball with any decent pace, let alone with effortless power.
Having two hands on the racket allows you to better control the racket head and therefore the ball – at least in the sense that you don't miss the court by meters long or wide.
But, those two hands on the racket also have a negative side: You tend to grip the racket too tight and use only your arms to generate power.
The result is usually just a strong “push” instead of an effortless swing like you see the pros hit.
So, you're stuck in this no-man's land; yes, you have better control of the ball than if you just swing at it with a one-handed backhand, but it feels like you need an enormous amount of effort to hit the ball with any decent speed.
Even if you do manage to hit it with some speed, you most likely don't hit it with any good amount of topspin – so you're again not able to control the ball well at higher speeds.
By now, you've probably realized that, the harder you try to generate power with your arms, the tighter you get and the more inconsistent your backhand becomes.
And this tightness of the arms robs you of another important aspect in the game of tennis: accuracy.
Being tight and muscling the ball prevents you from placing the ball accurately where you want.
Is there a solution to this puzzle that can be learned without having to spend years drilling the two-handed backhand to undo your bad habits?
Yes, there certainly is.

What Is The Key To Such Quick And Considerable Improvement?

Just one of the many ways I work on the biomechanics of the stroke (hip rotation in this case)
As you saw in the video above, the players in the "After" clips all have something in common. They have much better balance, and they engage their body more into the shot.
You may also notice that their technique is much more simple and effective.
(Note: In some cases, I don't try to change the technique of the stroke because the player may have been using it for 10 or 20 years and a major change may not be possible anymore. But – if the technique is good enough already, then the stroke will benefit a lot simply by correcting the player's biomechanics and balance.)
All these and many other players improved their two-handed backhands in a matter of days, sometimes in one single lesson. (like Hannah in the image to the left for example.)
So, what's the key to such quick and effective changes?
The answer: always focus primarily on biomechanics and only secondarily on technical details.
Analysis Based On The Former ATP Player's Two-Handed Backhand
While I play a one-handed backhand, I can demonstrate the two-handed backhand quite well.
It's good enough that I passed all the coaching certifications on my first try.
But, I wanted to give you something more. I wanted to include a really good role model that can actually play a two-handed backhand at a very high level.
I would like to thank my good friend Borut Urh for jumping in and helping me record lots of video footage for more detailed analysis.
Borut played on Slovenia's Davis Cup team for 9 years and reached the highest singles ranking on the ATP tour at number 281.
And guess what his best stroke is? Yes, the two-handed backhand.
Whenever I hit with Borut and he misses his two-handed backhand, I am always surprised. ;)
It happens that rarely.
I recorded Borut from different angles and in different situations. In preparation for this course, I recorded slow-motion video clips and still images to show you in detail what really goes on with a high-level two-handed backhand technique.

When it comes to my learning and understanding of how to develop sound tennis techniques, here's a quick overview of my journey as a tennis coach:
I started coaching tennis in 1997 after I completed my first coaching certification course in Slovenia, which was based on the European ITF system. I have since completed three levels of the ITF coaching system, the PTR American system, and, in October 2017, the GPTCA coaching course, which is the only association offering ATP-certified courses.
I have combined the methods of developing advanced tennis techniques that I learned through coaching courses and over 20 years of experience working with players, from beginners to nationally ranked players. In the process, I singled out the most effective drills and instructions that improve the two-handed backhand technique in the shortest possible time.
The key principle that emerged after assessing the effectiveness of various drills I tried over the course my coaching career is the principle of biomechanics.
Biomechanical exercises target the key segments of the body that are responsible for the power and control of the two-handed backhand stroke.
Stroke biomechanics are the fundamentals upon which the rest of the stroke is developed. In most cases, the problem is that these fundamentals are missing.
Most of the players in the video above lacked hip rotation and engaged their arms too much.
By focusing on getting the fundamentals right first – meaning getting the player more stable and having them initiate the stroke through the hip rotation – the power and control of their two-handed backhands quickly improved, and that's before we even started to work on technical details.
This is the reason why all these players could improve quickly: We used feel-based exercises to help them feel the importance of balance, how to engage their hips, how the hands need to work together and how the rest of the stroke comes together. The results are obvious.
It is only through feeling the right movements that the player acquires them quickly.
That's why it's crucial that the two-handed backhand is developed through actual physical exercises and not just through theoretical explanations.
I have therefore recorded and organized all my knowledge of how to develop a technically sound two-handed backhand so that anyone can follow the process and significantly improve their two-handed backhands.

The Two-Handed Backhand Video Course
Unleashing The Power Of Two Hands

The Two-Handed Backhand video course is a unique teaching approach that helps you correct and transform your two-handed backhand from a powerless, mediocre stroke to an effortless, accurate stroke in three stages:

Effortless Power Through Biomechanical Exercises: The biomechanics module provides a general overview of how the two-handed backhand actually works and what exercises you need to do in order to generate power from your body instead of your arms. You'll also learn how the hands need to work based on levers since they need to work together and not fight each other, as often happens.

Correct Technique Through Key Checkpoints And Practical Drills: The two-handed backhand technique may seem simple and obvious at first glance, but it is in fact quite a complex movement, especially if you observe the work of the hands. The slow-motion videos and still images in the technique module point out the smaller details of the two-handed backhand and show you practical exercises to help ingrain the right movements.

Playing Backhands On The Move Through Stances And Footwork Training: In this module, you will learn specific footwork patterns and stances that will enable you to move to the ball quickly and efficiently, regardless of whether the ball is short, deep, close, or far.
The Two-Handed Backhand video course can be watched online on a PC, MAC, iPad, iPhone, or any Android-based device.
All the videos are in MP4 format, and you can download high-quality or lower-quality (smaller size) videos to your computer, tablet, or smartphone so you can use the instruction right there on the court.

This is the best two handed backhand course I have taken!
Tomaz steers away from the standard "unit turn-racquet back-extension-follow through" advice we have been given by coaches in the past.
Here he brings instruction to a new level focusing on bio-mechanics, use of levers and fulcrum points in the joints and how to produce effortless power.
It is a totally innovative and brilliant approach to instruction and at the end of the day, his methodology works extremely well in accelerating improvement in stroke production.

Here’s what’s included
Biomechanics Section
Biomechanical exercises unlock the power of your body and relieve your arms of tension and strain. That allows you to control the ball much better because your arms and hands now have more feel and are more free to move within their full range of motion. Power now comes from the body, and your hands can now do a much better job of controlling the ball flight and applying topspin.
You’ll learn:

Various exercises that help you feel the power from the hip rotation that can work in a matter of minutes (as you'll see in the case study);

How to add natural swing to your two-handed backhand stroke so that it becomes even more effortless;

How both hands need to work in sync through a principle of levers (most adult recreational players have no coordination between both hands)

How to train your non-dominant arm to become more dominant (otherwise, you'll struggle to hit the ball cleanly).
And much more (approx. 50 minutes of instruction.)

Technique Section
The technique module goes into greater detail on every part of the two-handed backhand stroke, helping you create a very clear mental image of the stroke. You'll also learn effective feel-based exercises that help you memorize the right movements.
You’ll learn:

The optimal grips for your left and right hand so that they can work in tandem and allow you to generate easy topspin and ball control;

Wow you can simplify the preparation/backswing phase and therefore gain time and manage difficult situations much better;

How to combine hip rotation and racket lag to generate maximum power;

How to improve the accuracy of the two-handed backhand by focusing on a specific movement in the follow-through.
And much more (approx. 45 minutes of instruction.)

Footwork & Stances Section
You can hit effective two-handed backhands only if you're in the right place at the right time. This module shows you the most common footwork patterns and simple drills to improve your balance and movement around the court.
You’ll learn:

Why you should focus more on balance and body rotation and not so much on weight transfer;

How to hit a good two-handed backhand even from a closed stance (by learning the concept of "getting out of the stance");

How to handle difficult balls from an open stance (by making sure you have the correct axis of rotation);

Which footwork pattern works best for deep balls where you have to move backward;

How to recover fast from wide court positions, regardless of your stance.
And much more (approx. 70 minutes of instruction.)

Hi Tomaz,
I just finished reading and watching the videos of the course module for the two handed backhand.
Today I hit on the ball machine for the first time since practising your mirror drills and found that BOTH my backhand and forehand had a pronounced increase in speed and power! Wow! A double whammy!
Not only am I able to hit with more power but my balls are very deep...so deep that I realized I really need to finish quite high to keep them in the court. This is so exciting to experience since I have been playing for many years and have never felt this "easy power" before.
There is no doubt in my mind that after I spend more time on court honing these new techniques I will certainly become a stronger and more confident player. This course has given me incredible bang for the ($) money and far surpasses the in person private lessons I have had so far. And I have had many!
Thank you so much Tomaz, I can’t wait to start playing matches with my new weapon! Best, Sue Z

Frequently Asked Questions
The Two-Handed Backhand video course can be used by beginners, too, except that I recommend they skip the Biomechanics section and start working on the Technique and Footwork modules. Once the player becomes more consistent in playing two-handed backhands in easy conditions, they can start studying the biomechanics section. Advanced players, on the other hand, should first start with the Biomechanics module as it will improve their backhand very quickly.
It depends on your current skill level and the amount of practice you put in. If you practice at least twice a week for at least 20 minutes then you should see constant progress with your backhand. Most intermediate and advanced tennis players improve a lot in just a single hour as you have seen from the before & after videos above.
You have permanent access to the course that never expires. Not only that, but you can also download the videos to your PC, tablet or smartphone and watch them without the need for internet connection.
This video course works for every type of player because it teaches your body how to work more efficiently regardless of your current technique. Better technique allows you to hit faster and with more control but any two-handed backhand will benefit from biomechanics drills.
If you work on all the exercises presented in the Two-Handed Backhand video course and you don’t see significant progress in your backhand, then simply request a refund, no questions asked.
