Incredible video that has literally taught me this technique in an hour after forehand/pancake serving through my whole first year playing. Feels very natural now to just “let go”. What video would you recommend next, eg to get the body rotating correctly?

In reply to Greg LAU.

Very much appreciated, Greg!

The so called old school already had all the technical elements when it comes to the serve including the pronation.

Amazing tennis was played in the "old times", here's one interesting clip to see the mastery of skills players had:

Dear Thomaz, thanks for teaching this "lost art" (arm pronation when serving). I am 58 and now picking up tennis again. Everyone playing around me is not using this technique. They told me the game changes so much everyone is using modern techniques; but I more opt to old school. Your tutorial reminds me when I learn to serve ay my youth, this was the movement everyone must do (i.e. Vitas, Borg, Sampras, etc). All your teachings are so good and brings back all wonderful memories. You are the best coach on the web.

In reply to Calvin.

Thanks for the feedback, Calvin!

I don't think it's too late, the brain is always learning.

Just go slow with pronation drills, don't force it because the movement is a bit strange to the arm first and you can easily injure yourself if you force it too much.

So do the drills and don't focus on the outcome, just let the learning take place at which ever speed it does...

Thanks for this video. One of the best I've read and seen to help with pronation. I'm 54yo with 4.0-4.5 groundstrokes but with probably a 3.0-3.5 serve because instead of pronating when I serve, I tend to finish with a supination and slice and my serve is quite slow. When I go with a flat serve, I'm not quite pronating either ... more of a pancake serve even though I'm using a continental grip. I'm opening the face early in my racket drop. Do you think it's too late for someone my age to revamp his serve? I will try to follow your tips and see how it goes. I figure I have nothing to lose as my current serve isn't the greatest or most consistent so will try really hard to re-wire my muscle memory to focus on letting go with pronation to see if I can generate more racquet speed. The most difficult will be changing my slice serve (which I finish with a big supination) to hitting the edge of the ball and still pronating. That will be a big, big challenge for me. Wish me luck.

In reply to Jacob.

Hi Jacob,

I have seen players serve with one hand and play with another and have even coached one and there is more than enough time to switch hands.

You should definitely try it if you feel you have a better throwing motion there.
