Drop on edge is also an advanced atp technique!! Jus look at novak , del potro !! If it’s good for the best player in the world , it’s sure good for us :)

So true !! I’m an average club player ( maybe a ntrp 4/4.5 and I’ve been toying around with the fed table top !!! Not only was I highly inconsistent but my forearm was a painful mess after each session !!! Back to drop on the edge ala novak !! P.S :- the only good that happened whilst my table top sessions was due to my FH inconsistency, I started hitting more backhands so that’s improved considerably;)

Hi Shawn,

ATP style forehand is when players release the wrist to add extra "slap" into the ball and therefore get more power.

Since WTA style forehand doesn't have a "slap" players find a bit of extra power with a bit bigger backswing.

Why is it that if a player tends to have a "wta'' styled forehand, their racket would go behind their body rather than a "atp" styled forehand motion. Nothing is bad about the "wta" forehand...I am also curious to know what to change if a player is taking the racket behind but who is already comfortable with the "wta" forehand...

Excellent post. As a no better than average recreational player I was tempted to use Federer’s pat the dog technique. But as Tomas aptly noted it resulted in much more inconsistency, at least for me. Keep It Simple, Stupid, I often remind myself when on the court.

Thanks for your answer.
I fully agree. I can't believe people who advice to use Federer's forehand really teach players at club level. Many just won't have the coordination to move all the body segments to finish properly with the wrist lag. And some others will put 1 missile in the court for 6 in the fence.

In reply to <a href="https://www.feeltennis.net/forehand-wrist-lag/#comments/126648">jp</a>.

Hi JP,

Yes, less looseness at the end of backswing so less whip (or almost none) of the racket head through contact.

But enough power to be #1 WTA.

I also want to mention that there is just this obsession with POWER and yet coaches and players don't realize that the more power you have the more difficult it is to control it and as it is more difficult to hit the ball in the sweet spot at the right racket head angle at very high racket head speed.

Most people are actually not capable of such precision at high racket head speed and should not even look for this power.

An analogy would be if you now get a new Ferrari, it has way more power than your current car and yet you are not even close in driving skills to a formula 1 driver to actually make the most of Ferrari's power.

In fact, you are way more likely to crash with a Ferrari than with your car.

The same applies for this obsession for "more power" and which forehand is better. Yes, Federer's forehand is more powerful but who has the hand eye coordination and timing skills to control it?

Hi Tomaz. Great article because I'm bored with "hit your forehand like Federer" and so on. Just to discuss. Do you agree that there is much less looseness in the wrist at the end of the backswing for Halep and despite that she finds a decent amount of power ? I would not strictly recommend looking for a big wrist lag for women or young children because in addition to the precise timing it requires, it also requires physical skills in the forearm.

This is such a great article! Thank you.
It helped to solve an inconsistency I developed in my forehand, as well finally answer questions I had about the different racquet drop methods.
